The core program of mindfulness-based stress reduction consists of eight weekly two-hour classes and one daylong class. It includes guided instruction in mindfulness meditation and “mindful yoga practices,” exercises to “enhance awareness in everyday life,” daily mindfulness assignments lasting from forty-five minutes to an hour, and methods for improving communication. The program strongly emphasizes working with the body: body scanning and yoga exercises are thought to offer “full-body conditioning” to strengthen the body and release muscular tension.
